What is amber? And what does 'Baltic' amber mean?
Amber is the fossilized resin from ancient forests. Amber is not produced from tree sap, but rather from plant resin. This aromatic resin can drip from and ooze down trees, as well as fill internal fissures, trapping debris such as seeds, leaves, feathers and insects. The resin becomes buried and fossilized through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds.
Amber is a fossilized resin, not tree sap. Sap is the fluid that circulates through a plant's vascular system, while resin is the semi-solid amorphous organic substance secreted in pockets and canals through epithelial cells of the plant.
Baltic amber is amber found in the coastal areas around the Baltic Sea. Baltic amber is distinguished from other amber found around the world by the presence of high levels of succinic acid; that's why Baltic amber is otherwise known as succinite. The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, called Baltic amber or succinite. It dates from 44 million years ago. It has been estimated that these forests created more than 100,000 tons of amber.
Why 'raw' amber?
Polishing Baltic amber reduces its effectiveness in terms of the pain & inflammation fighting effects. So any color of amber that is semi-polished (raw) is going to be slightly more powerful than its full-polish counterpart.
What is succinic acid?
Succinic acid (butanedioic acid) is a dicarboxylic acid that occurs naturally in plant and animal tissues. The chemical is also known as “Spirit of Amber.” When it was first discovered, it was extracted from amber by pulverizing and distilling it using a sand bath. It was primarily used externally for rheumatic aches and pains.
